God is Love

God is love family devotional

This week we’re focusing on the fruit of the Spirit: love. I realized that most of the family devotionals we’ve had recently have been about character qualities that we want Finn to develop – which is great to focus on of course – but I want him to learn about God more than anything else. That’s why we decided to do this devotional on how God is love!

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

1 John 4:16B

For this devotional, there was a little less discussion than we normally have. Finn was quiet but attentive. We kept it short and sweet: we started out by reading 1 John 4:16B. Tyler asked us what love is and then we read 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

Pin this!

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

We read it through and then explained that because God is love, God is all of these qualities. So we re-read it by changing the wording to “God is patient, God is kind…” We particularly emphasized how God always protects, since Finn is concerned about whether or not God will protect him at night when he goes to bed.

It was a sweet little devotional about a powerful lesson that we will repeat again and again: God is love.
