God is Love

March 13, 2020
God is love family devotional

This week we’re focusing on the fruit of the Spirit: love. I realized that most of the family devotionals we’ve had recently have been about character qualities that we want Finn to develop – which is great to focus on of course – but I want him to learn about God more than anything else. That’s why we decided to do this devotional on how God is love!

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

1 John 4:16B

For this devotional, there was a little less discussion than we normally have. Finn was quiet but attentive. We kept it short and sweet: we started out by reading 1 John 4:16B. Tyler asked us what love is and then we read 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

Pin this!

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

We read it through and then explained that because God is love, God is all of these qualities. So we re-read it by changing the wording to “God is patient, God is kind…” We particularly emphasized how God always protects, since Finn is concerned about whether or not God will protect him at night when he goes to bed.

It was a sweet little devotional about a powerful lesson that we will repeat again and again: God is love.

Do Unto Others

February 28, 2020
do unto others family devotional

This family devotional was borne out of wanting Finn to treat his brother well. Overall, he’s pretty gentle and nice to Justus, but every once in a while he’ll snatch a toy from Justus or be a little too rough. We wanted him to be able to think about how others might feel based on his actions. This is a lot for a three-year-old but I was surprised by how much this resonated with him. We’ve referred back to this “do unto others” verse multiple times since discussing it.

“Just as you want others to do for you, do the same for them.”

Luke 6:31

The Prodigal Son Devotional

February 21, 2020
prodigal son family devotional

We ended up doing this family devotional because earlier that day, Finn had made a reference about God “liking” him if he did the right thing. I wanted to emphasize to him that God loves us no matter what – even if and when we leave him and disobey him – He always loves us and always wants us to return to Him. Even though the story seemed a bit mature for his age, I felt called to share this prodigal son devotional with him.

Family Devotional: God’s Creation

January 17, 2020
God's Creation
For the busy mama: listen to an audio recording of this post!

Weekends are for waffles (or french toast, or pancakes…) This morning, that meant guava stuffed french toast from my new favorite weekend spot: Brunchies. I don’t even have a picture to show you guys just how delicious my breakfast was because, well, I ate it.

Today our family devotional was about the Creation. We read through Genesis 1 in Finn’s Beginner Bible. We had planned to go for a walk and talk about the things we saw that God had created, but it started to rain so we just looked out of the window instead (our house overlooks a nature preserve).
