When You Need Comfort…

when you need comfort

Are you in need of some comfort today, mama? I don’t know about you, but I woke up this morning in need of encouragement. And God sent it to me, by way of a beautiful sunrise, a pack of wild pigs, and this Bible verse…

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

In case you needed the reminder: God loves you

How has God shown you His love? For me, I see His love in my family and in nature. I get little “I love you’s” from God through Tyler every day. And I constantly am in awe of God’s love for me when I think about how much I love my kids. If I love my kids this much, and I’m a sinful human being, how much more does God love me?! (Matthew 7:11)

In nature, I see God’s beauty, intentionality and creativity – which show me that God loves us because He put such effort into this world for us to enjoy. I couldn’t help but laugh with delight at the mama pig and her baby pigs grazing just outside our backyard this morning. It struck me how creative God is – and how He has such a sense of humor!

We have eternal comfort waiting

If I could list the top 5 things that I need right now, comfort would be one of them. Between all that’s going on in our world, situations with family and friends that weigh heavily on my heart, my own health battles, and the daily grind of life…I could use a bit of comfort.

I think of being wrapped up in God’s arms (Psalm 91:4), God singing over me like a mother to her hurting child (Zephaniah 3:17), or even Him preparing a meal for me (Isaiah 25:6) – comfort food at the highest level. The kind that truly satisfies my spirit and soul.

The good news is that God comforts us now – and He will comfort us for eternity, as well. If you need to read more about God’s comfort today, I encourage you to start with 2 Corinthians 1:3-11 and to pray through some psalms of comfort.

God will establish your work

The last part of this Bible verse talks about how God will establish us in every good work and word. What does this mean, exactly? This means that as we follow Him, He will bless our good works. He will help our efforts to not be in vain (Galatians 6:9). He will help us to stand firm to the end.

This may not look the way we think it will (see When God Has Other Plans). He might not establish the exact work YOU want Him to establish, but if we trust in Him, He will help us stand firm in all the ways that matter.

Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain.

Psalm 127:1

The converse of this verse can also be true: when the Lord builds the house, the builders do not labor in vain. My prayer is to build my household, my family, with the Lord. I want to entrust myself, my marriage and my parenting to God. I want Him to establish that work.

Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

I believe that God is faithful. He will complete the work He started in our lives. Let’s keep calling on Him to establish the work that we’re doing in our homes.

Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9

My prayer for you today is that you can experience God’s comfort – through His scriptures, through the people around you, through nature and His Spirit. I pray that you will be filled with His comfort and hope so that you can keep doing the good work that God has given for us to do – to be moms! And what a blessing it is to be a mother. Let’s not give up, mamas.
